The Japanese Surrendered to the Soviet Union in 1941

Declassified documents show that the Japanese were more demoralized by the Soviet Union's declaration of war and their surprise invasion of Manchuria. One thing motivating the bombings may have been a desire to pay back what happened at Pearl Harbor in 1941. The use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan, says Admiral William Leahy.
