Athenians invented the jen of tragedy, and played a key role in inventing comedy. For them, theatre was a form of a branch of politics. The plays of aristophanes, euripides, sophocles seemed to touch on burning political questions of their day. And also often to be pretty explicit and heart hitting in their criticism of specific characters like socrates and cleon.
