How to Choose the Appropriate Test Scope?

There are many factors and there is also not one right answer. The test should cover some business functionality even if it is in a unit test. If the tests take longer to run, take longer to set up, take more data to this then. Maybe I need to schedule these differently. How might I know the appropriate amount of testing to do is different to you?
