The Evolution of Consciousness in Non Human Animals
There does have to be emergence. It's either there or it's not, you know, either you have some kind of property that ontologically doesn't reduce to the whole or you don't. I think it's plausible that the functional architecture of the brain is relevant to the conscious experiences and the structure of conscious experiences. So my conjecture, but it's an empirical conjecture. Is that strong emergence is sensitive to purely functional kinds of forms of organization. And we can contemplate scenarios where we can replace components of the brains with non organic ones in a way that they are functionally equivalent. How would that impact consciousness?
