A Distilled History of Gin

Stuff You Missed in History Class

CHAPTER

The Gin Act of 1751

The gin act of 17 51 built on the one that had been passed in 17 forty three. It increased the duty on gin and set a licensing fee of two pounds a year. Jin's popularity continued to wane in the k after this, dropping from an estimated eight point five million gallons consumed in 17 51 to 5 point nine million just a year later. The war may have contributed to a decline in the illicit liquor trade as well. Some people who had been supporting themselves that way instead found work related to the war. A new style of beer was also introduced around this time that would be porter which started to become more popular and more affordable to working class people.
