Pompey and the Anti-Pirate Task Force

Pompey asked the Senate to put him in charge of the anti-piracy task force. Despite vehement opposition by conservative senators who feared Pompey's growing power, he was granted an extraordinary command. Over the winter, Pompey built ships, trained his troops, and devised a strategy. He deployed his navy into thirteen separate designated zones each commanded by a separate legate. The mission was simple, find the pirates, and destroy them.
