It was really important for sydney to be able to experience just this yda sense of hope, the sense of joy and all these things to counterbalance the dreadful things that were happening to her. I mean, it is a despairing novel in a lot of ways, i hope authentically so. But it's totally absurd to write something horrifying, that's horrifying on every page for 350 pages, because that's just exhausting and ridiculous.
