A massive earthquake struck off Japan's east coast, the most powerful ever recorded in the country. It caused a tsunami that devastated coastal communities over more than 500 kilometers and killed more than 20,000 people. The officials there are warning of a possible nuclear reactor meltdown. If they stay that way, they could release radioactivity and a disaster of unknown proportions.
