The key for hypertrophy is you need mechanical tension. Mechanical tension just means that there's an involuntary slowing of the contractile speed, which just means you're getting close to failure. So we need to be within three reps of failure for a muscle to grow for hyperTrophy. And studies will show that anywhere really between five and 30 reps can elicit that.
