The Labyrinth

Growing up outside Chichester in the Roman palace and then going to that exhibition. So I had seen how things were found. It's not just that they're there. And that's where a huge amount of my writing comes from, the idea that the past is there to be excavated. The blind sockets of one skull stare up at her. Her legs start to tremble. The pale flame in her hand flickers. Shock steals her breath. She is standing at the edge of a shallow grave. A slight depression in the ground, no more than that. In it, there are two skeletons, once human. The bones picked clean by time.
