The Job That Universities Are to Do Is to Be a Countervailing Force
The fact that so many people of one particular political persuasion inhabit academic units. The reason that universities exist is because we have created a kind of clerical class whose major responsibility is to ask big questions. We set aside time and space for these people to do it. And theyr is to ask those questions and try to come up with the best answers they can. That's, as you say, tha's what we hire them to do.
