The Responsibility of Preachers in a Culture of Shame and Banishment
I think there's something interesting of like how much responsibility these preachers end up taking on. And what kind of a safety net they become in a culture that has a lack of other safety nets, especially I can imagine in the Dallas Fort Worth area in the 80s. That also reminds me of the way Louisa May Alcott grew up because her father was a transcendentalist. So she was raised in this ethos of like we must give up little pleasures for ourselves because they don't really matter. They don't feel as good as doing nice things for other people.
