Calvinists take this as a universal, sociological world view of saying that god has chosen certain individuals to be given to christ. But in the context of john six and john 17, where jesus is down from heaven, he's on earth as the incarnate word. And so that's the context of that passage. You have to understand that context and the historical nature of what's happening in that context to understand the intention of jesus.
