What Is the Purpose of the Law?
By god's law, the sinner sees how desperately wicked his heart is. The law shows him that even those things he used to think were good works are, in fact, sin. By his promises, christ teaches us that we will receive power to obey. Works do not belong to the gospel. Only faith belongs to it. Whoever now believes the gospel will receive divine grace and the holy spirit. And that is the law's real mission.
