Bessing is when people communicate about things that they know little to nothing about, and in which they have no regard or concern for what we would call truth. The behavior of beessing is often characterized by a wide range of rhetorical strategies designed to communicate without any regard for truth evidence or established knowledge. It may come out in the form of exaggerating one's competence, or their knowledge or their skills in a domain. Or it may come out as trying to impress others, fit in with others, influence or persuade them, or to embellish, or to confuse, or to simply hide the fact that they really don't know what they're talking about. John V. Petrocelli is an experimental social psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Wake Forest University. His research examines the causes and consequences of bullshit and bullshitting in the way of better understanding and improving bullshit detection and disposal. He is the author of The Life-Changing Science of Detecting Bullshit. Petrocelli’s research contributions also include attitudes and persuasion and the intersections of counterfactual thinking with learning, memory and decision making. His research has appeared in the top journals of his field including the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Petrocelli also serves as an Associate Editor of the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
