Putin's Purpose in the War

Putin has made it clear on multiple occasions that he has not actually abandoned any of his original maximalist war aims, which do include the change of regime and keve. He is very focused on breaking Western will. And so I think that the Russian approach here is to blunt this counter offensive, top that possibly makes him gains in the Northeast. Although, as you say, it's not clear entirely what his purpose is there.
