The modern Indian art movement seems to have first flourished in Kolkata in the late 19th century. During the colonial period Western artistic influences began to have a powerful effect on Indian artists. Rabindranath Tagore was one notable artist who wanted to preserve the spiritual elements in Indian art and avoid what he saw as the materialism of the West.
