The Wicker Man: A Celebration of the Summer Solstice
The 1973 classic The Wicker Man is being re-released to mark its 50th anniversary. It has earned itself cult status, not just because of a darkly comic script by the playwright Antony Shaffer. American composer Paul Giovanni drew on British and Scottish folk song for its combination of surface, innocence and underlying threat. A special concert at the Barbican this Saturday will celebrate that sound with music from Summer Isle. With me in the studio now are Alistair Roberts and Jim Feiner, who've been specially commissioned to write a suite of folk songs for the event.
