What Are Salamander Tweens?
In his new book, David Wheeler looks at salamander tongues. Salamanders have an amazingly specialized tongue that shoots out half a body length in seven milliseconds and then comes back after attaching the insect to its mouth. What they do is they shoot a series of gill bones wrapped in connect tissue. Gathered to a tongue shooting out half aBody length in 7 milliseconds, hits an insect,. And then the whole thing just as fast comes back into mouth. I'm picturing, it's almost like a pop gun or something that's got a fork or something right? That's right.
