The book chronicles the way this feverish sense of a war sort of gathers steam. World War II is so endlessly used as a justification for other wars, he says. And I think that, yes, the pacifists failed, obviously utterly failed to stop the war and edit every juncture when they called for some sort of moment of negotiation or something, they were rebuffed. But if you rescue their voices out and tease those voices out in all the clamor of kind of war fever that happens, it can be fascinating.
