I think it was the right move or at least once I started using hooks I started writing lots of custom hooks. You really do have to learn how react works under the hood in order to really be effective at writing custom hooks and that was always their intention. Unless something is extremely simple you're wrapping functionality togetheryou're packaging them together in your own hook in your app.
