In 1941, John Brinkley ran for the Texas Senate. This was the same year he lost a libel suit against the AMA and faced investigation from the State Department and the IRS. There was some worry that even with all this, he might still win. A writer for the Emporia Gazette wrote about him: "He is irresistible to the moron mind"
