What if the thought that just crossed your mind arrived the same way a prayer is answered? In this lecture, Jordan Peterson opens with a claim that sounds impossible and spends the next ninety minutes making it undeniable: that thinking is a kind of secularized prayer, that every insight you have ever had arrived more like a revelation than like a calculation, and that the direction you aim decides not only what you think but what you are able to see at all. From an ordinary argument with your wife, which Peterson uses to reveal something disturbing about the spirit in which you speak, he moves through a prophet alone in a cave, a man swallowed by the sea for staying silent, and two brothers and a rejected offering, building toward a single answer to the oldest question a person can ask. What faith turns out to be has almost nothing to do with belief in the way you were taught, and everything to do with a decision you are already making, every hour, whether you have noticed it or not.
