I think one of the reasons for it is like I am so steeped in Cold War categories, in modern conservative categories left and right. It takes real effort for me to sort of take a step back and look at how these impulses are distributed in surprising ways before World War II. And things could just get even murkier when you get into the 19th century. A lot of very serious, very influential southern progressives were also stone cold racists.
