The Great Terror was the not so much Stalin's individual paranoia. His paranoia was being buoyed forward by a general desire and in co-hate desire within the Bolshevik party to punish itself for what it had done. China though, because it shook the dew off the peasant willy, but then with the Cultural Revolution sort of pivoted and cleansed itself of its guilt for that. The thing is they were building capitalism without knowing it or at least building an inevitable road to a crisis that would create either capitalism or an annihilation. And Russia basically got a little bit of both.
