The Paradimes of the Book of John
Figures within the book can serve as archetypes, or paradimes for understanding larger groups of people. Lazarus is a man who is loved by christ and raised by his voice. In verse two we are told about the action of mary that will occur in the chapter that follows. The hearer of the gospel ist presumed to know who mary and martha are. This might be an instance of john assuming knowledge of one of the synoptic gospels of his readers.
