What Happened to Ceres?

There was a time that it was believed that we had four entire planets between mars and jupiter. Pallas, juno and vesta were all smaller than ceres, so they too were considered minor planets. But of course, if you crack open any current text book the features our solar system, none of these objects are listed as planets at all.
