Is There Any Intelligence in the Computer?

The only sense in which the computer has intelligence is in a not an intrinsic but it's an observer relative sense. We can interpret its operations in such a way that we can make epistemically objective claims of intelligence even though the intelligence in question is entirely in the eye of the beholder. This was brought home forcefully to me when I read in the newspapers that IBM had designed a computer program which could beat the world's leading chess player, Kasparov. But now notice deep blue knows none of that because it doesn't know anything.
