All six victims died from head injuries by the blunt edge of a farmyard tool, such as a pickaxe. Victoria had sustained the most injuries, including markings consistent with strangulation and nine star-shaped wounds to her skull. Seven-year-old Celie was the only victim who did not die instantly, enduring two to three hours of agony before finally succumbing to her injuries. Police dogs were dispatched in an attempt to capture whoever had been hiding above but no trace of the individual was found.
