The Curse Comes to Adam, but He Has a Spiritual Death
In Genesis, Adam is cursed to die on the day he eats fruit. He lives for centuries after that day and has a spiritual death instead of a physical one. The curse was said from god's point of view rather than by Adam himself. In some ways this makes no sense at all if you take it as literal as modern interpretation would suggest. But in other ways there are theological grounds behind augustine's interpretations.
