The Difference Between Gigantism and Acromegaly
Gigantism occurs when a person starts making too much human growth hormone before the epiphesial plate fuses. This normally happens at some time between the ages of 14 and 17. It's usually caused by a benign tumor, known as an adenoma, on the pituitary gland in your brain. The name acromegaly comes from Greek roots that mean large extremities. For example, Frenchman Andrei René Russamaw became famous first as a professional wrestler, but he also became an actor. He is best remembered for his portrayal of Bezak the Giant in the 1987 movie The Princess Bride.
