The Repercussions of the Plague on Athens

The plague led to a general lawlessness in Athens. The temples themselves became sites of great misery, as refugees from the Athenian countryside had been forced to find accommodation inside them. Some Athenians even pointed to the plague as evidence that the gods favored Sparta. Despite this though, the Athenians found unlikely and remarkable success on the sea in the northwest thanks to their brilliant naval commander Formio. Unfortunately for him, he too wouldn't live long enough afterwards.
