Inside Exercise

CHAPTER

The Effects of Exercise on Muscle Protein Synthesis

The current idea is if you exercise, you'll increase signaling via the mTOR pathway. The phosphorylation of proteins in that cascade switches on muscle protein synthesis. If you immobilize someone, you don't see any detrimental effect on mTOR signaling proteins - at least despite muscle protein synthesis going down. So there's further evidence, if you like, that inactivity and exercise are different mechanisms.
