The Origins of Medieval Philosophy
Medieval philosophers didn't spend all their time arguing about God and theology. As early as the Carolingian period, we find examples of philosophical debate being conducted for its own sake. Like souls, according to most medieval philosophers, such debates could have a life of their own. Medieval philosophy was deeply and centrally concerned with problems related to language.
