The Importance of Credit Scores
In the 1960s, credit managers whose job was to sit down with applicants said credit scoring will never work. To this day, black consumers are affected disproportionately by credit scoring and mortgage lending. These kinds of biases are reproduced in algorithms that are designed to process applications. There might be proxies for race or gender but they don't have to do with financial performance. It's a question is whether technology can actually make the world more fair?
