The Feast of St. Augustine
In 1565, Captain Pedro Menendez de Avelaz set up a colony on the coast of Florida. He and his 800 settlers came ashore in what is now known as St. Augustine. The settlement was deeply Catholic but also had its fair share of Protestant settlers. By 1821, after bouncing from Spanish hands to the British and then back again, the United States acquired the eastern portion of Florida by deal with Spain.
