What's the Difference Between a Depression and a Depressive Disorder?

In practice there's a lot of confusion that surrounds the end. Most clinicians in my experience don't have a clear idea of what exactly they mean by the diagnostic terms that they're using. The risk is that we alienate patients from their own emotional lives and from their own social circumstances, which in most cases clinicians are not doing.
