LZ Granderson: Slavery in the American South was different from polygamy. He says slave owners had to provide for their slaves or they would go free. LZ: Laws were very clear that abuse could not be more than moderate physical correction. If you murdered a slave, he says, it was essentially as if you killed a free white person.
