The Battle of St. Elmo
Saperas had dug trenches all the way from the heights, 600 yards, down to the stone-cut ditch. A week after that first clash, the one in which Jean came back with the heads, the night woke up to the deafening crash of Ottoman guns. On June 2nd, looking out across the water towards St. Elmo,. he caught a glimpse of white sails on the horizon. Could it be a relief force from Sicily? Were they saved already? They were not saved. If anything, their situation had just gotten much, much worse.
