Third Party in American Politics
A successful third party kills one of the existing parties and replaces it. The incentive, the built-in incentives and institutional arrangements make it almost impossible to have a multi-party democracy. Third parties typically punish the party they're closest to because they divide the same coalition of voters in some way. But if it's a Trump Biden race, I think there's a big middle available for a Mitch Daniels, Joe Manchin ticket.
