And cuts a long story short, terius rapes philamela, ie his sister in law. To prevent her from standing witnessr bearing witness to what's happened to her, he cuts out her tongue. However, she does bear witness to what happenedo by weaving the story of her rape. Because that is itself a plot development that leads to a kind of gruesome denoument.
