The Importance of Suffering
Schopenhauer engages with the great questions of mankind. But he's just at that time in history when religion seems to be losing its hold. He's an atheist and there's no place for a God in his system. There is no point to human life. It simply contains suffering to which there's no further point. We think it would be better not to exist.
