The plague of Cyprian has been raging now for some 20 years since the reign of Trajan Dixius and this is what Kyle Harp has characterized as a viral hemorrhagic fever. This decimates the Goths as well as the Romans and Claudius himself falls victim to this and dies of the plague at Sermium in September of 270. So he really doesn't sacrifice his life for the Empire, he died of the plague. Because he's won this great victory or the great victory is attributed to him the Senate deifies him immediately and they vote to erect a golden statue of him in the precinct of the Temple of Jupiter on the capital line.
