The Importance of Luxury in Character
Seneca: Luxury is of course not a great sin. What does having a Gucci handbag say about our character? That we are good or bad? Or does it say nothing at all? A virtuous person doesn't allow discomfort or comfort to negatively impact the quality of their character, Seneca says. The point is that he or she doesn't require avoidance of poverty or attainment of wealth to possess that virtuous nature.
