I don't particularly like violence against animals or animal death in this sort of thing, but it is very much a practical rule. A better way to say it be, if there was a cat present that Gertrude was spending loads of time with having a chill, you don't kill the cat. We're not going to kill that punishment for another character. But at the same time, I don't feel like saying that there might theoretically have been a cat who died 50 years ago.
