Mata hired a lawyer named Stephen Schwartz of the firm Levidow Levidow and Overman who filed in state court in New York two and a half years later. But as it turns out, injuries on international flights are subject to a treaty called the Montreal Convention. An article 35 of that treaty says that you have to bring your claims within two years.
