There are two proposed quotations from the same source, Hilda Nihart. She was the daughter of John Nihart and she accompanied her father to meet Black Elk in 1931. The old man did not live long, but before he passed away, Lucy reveals Black Elk told them, "The only thing I really believe is the pipe religion" A parent reference to traditional Lakota practices in contrast to Christianity.
