There is another possibility in newtonian theory, that there's not two sides of the janus point. It could be that the universe starts from zero size. Such solutions exist within newton's and were discovered about a hundred and 30 years ago. And what is very interesting about those solutions is that the shape is very special - it's called a central configuration. So i think that might be a newtonian model for what the big bang was like.
