The History of the ISCA

We would do tests for escape and they would simply do the work. We would remove toys. They would not engage in problem behavior to get the toys. So there were no main effects of attention, escape or tangibles. But then we would synthesize them. And so the child would have his toys removed, instructions imposed. And if they engaging in problem behavior, they'd get a break - toys and attention. This seems very strange because none of those components were reinforcers on their own. When synthesized, stitched together, combined, they served as reinforcement for problem behavior. That was really an aha moment for our group.
