The Memorial Day Massacre

The shooting only lasted 15 seconds, but approximately 200 rounds were fired. Police walked through the remaining crowd, swinging their clubs. Lupé Marshall was hit in the back of the head as she tried to flee. The violence inflicted on the strikers helped break the strike. With ongoing pressure from the war labor board, Republic Steel President Tom Gerdler eventually agreed to a collective bargaining agreement in 1942.
